Page plays the majority of his solo in the key of E, rather than the home key of A, almost as if he was trying to lead a type-2 modulation. Trey doesn’t go along with it, though, which leaves Mike kind of stuck in the middle.

This is the best Julius ever in my opinion, and I've listened to a lot of them over the years. It was my 7th show and the night I really "got it". The rest of the show is incredible with an evil YEM and perfect a cappella transition into Sleeping Monkey, a dark and blistering Antelope, a Tasty Fog, a great My Friend, and more. The Julius is one of my favorites, however. They open the 2nd set with it and it just keeps going and going. Most Julius versions go back into the "don't take another step" way too soon for my liking. This one could've ended multiple times, but they just drive it even harder. It's so intense that Fishman yells a few times, Page bangs on the keys, and Trey is just ripping it. The whole place was just seriously getting down and boogying! I've played this Julius for a lot of people over the years, and everyone agrees how amazing it is. I know some people who say that horns are a requirement for a good Julius, and I can't argue with that, but please give this one a listen. It'll change your mind. I've wanted a soundboard or better copy of this show for years. I've had multiple audience sources, and none really capture the amazing nature of this night at Dane County Coliseum. It definitely changed my life for the better.

It’s funny in retrospect to think of Phish breaking into the mainstream consciousness, but they may have been closer to accomplishing this than we know. Hoist had been on the shelves for two months and must have received decent promotion in Kalamazoo; listening to the circulating AUD, you can hear a collective scream of recognition from the audience when Trey starts playing the opening riff. It makes me wonder what could have been...

First performance without the horns, but still a great groove. Kind of a "Hey-bob-a-reebop" riff from Trey during the solo. Pretty clear right from the start that the band really liked playing this song :-)
