It's Ice

n00b100 One of the fun things about 2013, *especially* in the Fall, was how the band would sneak out little pieces of improv here and there during Set 1 in unexpected places, almost to make sure we were paying attention before they really brought the thunder in Set 2. Take, for example, this jam, where out of the usual It's Ice we get treated to a *disgusting* funky jam, with Trey's Echoplex (which rather firmly established itself as an exciting new piece in the arsenal) meshing quite well with Page on the clavinet and Mike whipping up an effects storm. It's not the longest jam in the world, certainly, but it's tons of fun (like the 11/2 Theme) and well worth the listen, as is the rest of 12/29/13's quite good first set (not to mention the all-world second set).

Runaway_Jay Immediately following the opening composed section the band dives into a black hole of funk. Sonic waves immerse the listener in a hyperdrive ride through mike's buzzing effected bass, page's clav storm, trey's echoplex and fish's wombat-style groove drumming. After they ride the black hole for a bit, they gently hover over their landing pad and gently end up back on it's ice with seemingly wffortless grace and beauty.
