On to Chicago for the only two nights ever played at the Vic. Fourteenth show of Fall tour. Good sounding recording. Just enough crowd noise and you can still hear the stage chatter between songs.
Landlady is a standard good opening. A few missed spots from Trey, but nothing major. Right into a ripping Chalk Dust. No problems here. Bouncing is normal. Rift is not quite locking in with Fishman tonight. Trey's second solo section is rough. Guelah is really good. Well played right into Fish's drum part to Melt. Nice jam, which pulls Trey a bit out of tune going into Lizards. Mike has some problems keeping it together in this one. Mound is nice to hear and still gets better every time. Divided Sky was very sloppy tonight. Just not locking in again. Adeline was cut from the recording I heard. Too much shushing for the taper to deal with I suppose. Uncle Pen gets the call from Trey and this one is a barn burner. Way up tempo. Golgi is a nice closer, also well played.
Yee Haw! Solid Poor Heart to start off second set. Tweezer has a cut in intro part on the recording I heard. During the jam you'd swear you were listening to Slip, Stich and Pass as they play the same Jesus Left Chicago transition lick, as a tease for Chicago of course. Reba had a rough middle section with Trey and Page not locking in, but you get the funny bonus Walk the Line before the whistling. Sparkle is kind of sloppy tonight as is Maze. I don't know if it was nerves or the mix or what but they are just not with it. Lawn Boy is sweet with a nice Page solo. Mike's Song's got a huge cut in the recording. From the verse right into the jam. Tape flip maybe? Hydrogen has it's usual problems. Trey and Page are not locked in again. Weekapaug has a good jam, but is a little sloppy at times. This leads right into HYHU with Fish still on the drums. I don't know if I've ever heard that before. Holy crap! The only Whipping Post of 1992. Perfectly ridiculous. Tweeprise was a standard redition to close up for the night.
Memories was also cut from the recording I heard. A little stage banter brings us to the final GTBT. Pretty well played.
Ok show, but I hope tommorrow's is better. There were some good moments, but overall they just didn't get it all together for this one. Maybe that's why Whipping Post came out? Sometimes I feel...

December in Chicago: its freakin' cold. Winter break had just started at school and I was going to see Phish for the second and third time. I had been listening to Phish for well over a year, and had a ticket to see them on the spring 1992 tour, but I got sick as hell the night before the show. I gave my ticket to a friend. Finally I got to see them open for Santana that summer, which was great but short. These two shows at The Vic were finally my chance to see them in their full glory; back to back nights and a free ticket for the second night, via the girl I was seeing at the time.
I can honestly say I was hooked from the moment they opened with "The Landlady". The Vic is not very large, its like an old movie theater. I was about midway between the stage and soundboard the first night and much closer the second night. At the time I had become familiar with Phish's song arsenal so, needless to say, when they went into "Chalk Dust" I was psyched! Trey was in a bobbleheaded frenzy; I vaguely remember commenting on how he must have the most insane headache after playing a three hour show.
Over the course of these two nights we got some very tasty song nuggets packed by the boys. Night one included: "Rift" (this was about a month before the album Rift hit stores and I was blown away by the song), "Lizards", "Mound", "Reba" > "I Walk The Line" > "Reba" (which was awesome) and Jonnny B. Fishman kicking out a "Whipping Post".
Night two also had the same energy and a killer song list that included: "Foam", "Fee", "Fluffhead", "The Curtain" > "Stash", "TMWSIY " > "Avenu Malkenu" > "TMWSIY", "Lengthwise" (which I thought had to be a joke, until Rift came out in January) and a "Possum" encore complete with a "Vibration Of Life". These two shows really are the ones that sent me on the path.
