What I think you are hearing is a quality shift in the jam from a minor key (dark, mysterious, somber, and slinky) to a major key (light, happy, whimsical, and melodic.)
Take a listen to the Stash from Red Rocks from last summer. Does it do what you are describing? If it does, then this is your answer.
I've read a lot of song histories on this website, and I must say this is without a doubt the best I've read. As someone with a masters' degree in music performance (emphasizing on jazz), it's nice to see others who enjoy my favorite band are educated musicians. Thanks for the great read!
Can anyone out there explain the theory behind the interesting « shifts » I hear sometimes in jams from 1998 (especially Summer Tour)? It's hard for me to explain them but it's like the whole band suddenly takes a step in a new harmonic direction"... maybe a key change or a modal change (what do I know, I'm just a drummer). For example, partway through the Stash jam from 7.31.98, Polaris, or even more obviously, midway through that dank Buried Alive jam from 7.29.98, Riverport. Does anyone know what I'm talking about?
