DoktahgonzoGhost is, in my opinion, the most quintessential of Phish songs to come about. It arose right out of the Europe phase of '97 (which was crucial to the funk that ensued in the summer & fall that year) and has been an incredible and oft-used vehicle from that time since. I would say say (possibly controversially) that it is the most important vehicle to be written since YEM (which is to nearly say ever). Literally from within weeks of it's debut it was a SOLID jamming tune, and was a feature to many of the sets in which it appeared, and has done so for years beyond that ever since, and on an amazingly consistent basis. Pound for Pound it is the Manny Pacquiao of Phish songs over it's history. The 7/4/99 Ghost -> Slave is still probably my favorite segue of all-time (like fucking silk).

benhatleygood history of ghost, but i have tack on one of my favorite versions, 7/23/99 columbus, oh. this is a super-tigh version, and the jam has some of the most cohesive group interplay you will hear. not to mention, the free that follows is also a barn burner. really, the whole second set rips. don't miss the 25+ minute take of birds of a feather that follows free.

Gumbo72203I'd do many a nefarious and questionable thing to be able to hear the pornofunk Ghost of 98-00 just once, to witness the whammy sirens of joy loop out over the crowd....

Hampton was my first show; and the real Ghost died in the hills of Colorado on the Fiddler's Green...
