Copyright Declaration
A copyright is claimed on the Helping Phriendly Book (in electronic,
print, and any other form) by Dan Hantman (dan@www.phish.net),
and has been since January 1, 1998, on behalf of and for exercise by all
contributors, the Phish.Net, and the greater Phish community. The Helping Phriendly Book may not be used for any purpose besides personal reference and enjoyment or reproduced by any means without express
permission of the copyright holder(s). When reproduced, it must be
(1) always copied in whole, unchanged, and with this notice intact; and
(2) not sold or otherwise distributed commercially or otherwise used or
distributed for financial gain, nor in exchange for any fees, nor may the
distribution or transfer of this document and these files be made conditional
upon the purchase of any other service or product, nor upon payment of
fees related to any such other service, presumed or real. Further, no work
derived from this work may be offered or distributed for any fee. Citations
to this work should also reference this copyright declaration. For purposes
of clarification or in instances of dispute, Dan Hantman, the other Webmaster(s)
of the Phish.Net, and those individuals operating as Working Groups of
www.phish.net and archive.phish.net may, and shall when appropriate, defend rights and copyrights to this material by all appropriate and permissible avenues.
For further clarification, no portion of the Phish.Net Helping Phriendly Book may be reproduced anywhere on a commercial website. The copyright holder reserves the right to determine whether a website is commercial. In general, a website is considered to be a commercial website if any advertising whatsoever (e.g., banner space) is sold on the website (even if the advertising is only used to cover costs and not to generate profit). If a person makes any money off of any portion of his/her website, regardless of how much or how little, then it is a commercial site. A website is considered to be a commercial site if it is owned and operated in conjunction with a revenue-generating site, regardless of whether the owning entity does not make money off of the portion of the website where the content is shown. An example of this would be an e-card site delivered free of charge by a commercial entity, or similar free attraction used to lure visitors to the revenue generating portion of the commercial website. Non-profit organizations or charities are considered by the copyright holder to be commercial entities. All of this notwithstanding, any website (and any form of reproduction), including non-commercial ones, must have explicit permission from the copyright holder to use Helping Phriendly Book data.
If you see any potential copyright violation on or off the Internet, please contact Dan Hantman (dan@www.phish.net). In any case, do not contact, harass, or threaten any individual or group on behalf of the Phish.Net Helping Phriendly Book. Such communication will not be tolerated. If you are contacted by any one about the HPB, please email Dan Hantman, who will confirm the legitimacy of the communication. The Phish.Net is a place of giving and sharing, and the HPB will operate in devotion to that tradition, while also protecting its legal and ethical rights.

An Introduction
The Helping Phriendly Book (HPB) aims to be the ultimate resource for
the Phish fan and tape collector. Our goal is to list every song
and show Phish has ever played. Obviously, this collection is far from perfect, and we are always working
to improve. The data in the HPB is as accurate as possible, and compiled
primarily from verified tapes of each show.
The name of the HPB comes from
the legendary Gamehendge
saga. For more information, see the Phish
Net file of Frequently Asked
Questions (FAQ). Note: In general, the use of the " ph " in place of the " f " in Phishy circles (e.g., "phriends") is frowned upon. Nevertheless, the spelling "Phriendly" has been used for this resource to 1) keep with Phish.Net tradition and more importantly, 2) differentiate between this resource and the Helping Friendly Book as it is a part of the Gamehendge saga. Yes, this setlists and reviews collection is named after the Helping Friendly Book of Gamehendge, but it certainly does not purport to contain "the ancient secrets of eternal joy and never-ending splendor."
HPB-Mockingbird Joint Policy Statement
Effective September 1, 1999, a policy agreement was made between the Phish.Net Helping Phriendly Book and the Mockingbird Foundation. The Mockingbird Foundation is a non-profit corporation dedicated to the production of an encylopedic reference book about Phish. Central to that book is its setlist file, which has been compiled carefully and accurately by Mockingbird's Setlist Working Group. Organized from the start by Craig DeLucia, and now headed by Dan Hantman, this group is comprised of Phish fans both new and old, all of whom are well-versed in all aspects and eras of Phish's musical repetoire and history. The file they have compiled is, bar none, the most complete and accurate archive anywhere.
The Helping Phriendly Book has long stood has the primary setlist archive of the Phish fan community, although other useful documents do exist. The Mockingbird Foundation, unlike other organizations, has worked with community interests as its primary goals. (Indeed, their efforts are aimed even wider than the Phish community: all profits from the sale of their book will go to as-yet-undetermined charities.) Given their intents and the quality of their work, the time has come to recognize the Mockingbird Setlist File as the new definitive community archive. It is unnecessary and inefficient to maintain the Helping Phriendly Book's massive data when it is clear that the Mockingbird document will be publicly available in the somewhat near future. Furthermore, the Foundation's volunteers are better able to handle the data, as a group with a more varied collection of experiences and sources of information.
Thus, it has been decided that the existing setlists in the Phish.Net Helping Phriendly Book will not continue to be maintained with the same regularity. That is, errors and additions will not always be incorporated. Anything generously submitted to the Helping Phriendly Book staff (dan@www.phish.net) will be diligently forwarded to the Mockingbird Setlist Working Group for review and addition to their file, if appropriate. (All such contributions will be rightly credited by the Foundation.) Keep in mind that not all corrections are accurate, and only an organization with the resources of Mockingbird can verify all data.
Recognizing, of course, that the Helping Phriendly Book is still a useful online resource, it will continue to serve the data it already has. When the Mockingbird document becomes available, the mutual future of the projects will be evaluated. Of course, setlists for new shows will always be added. (These will primarily be transferred from http://www.phish.net/tour/.)
Some fans may be concerned about the motivation for this decision. It is true that I (Dan Hantman, current HPB custodian) am a member of the Mockingbird Foundation's Board of Directors. However, the Mockingbird Foundation finds its roots in the same online community as the Phish.Net movement, home to the Helping Phriendly Book. The Phish.Net and the Mockingbird Foundation have a shared history and a shared future. I am certain that this decision is in the best interest of the Helping Phriendly Book, the Phish.Net, the accuracy of available setlist data, and the fan base at large.
I cannot express enough how wonderful it is to be a part of the Helping Phriendly Book, to see how you all share your time and information so generously. I assure you that, as you continue to help, your contributions will be used for the greater good of all fans, and to no group's narrow self-interest. I hope, most of all, that all fans will contribute setlist information whenever they can. I welcome comments (and contributions!) at dan@www.phish.net. Thank you all for everything.
Best,
Dan Hantman
Setlists and Song List History
The Helping Phriendly Book was originally compiled by Richard Stern
and John Friedman in 1990. Sometime after September 1992, Richard and John
passed the HPB on to Shelly Culbertson, who had been hired by the band
as an archivist. A version was posted by Shelly dated 10/17/92. Lee Silverman
later took over the HPB. Chip Callahan compiled the setlists for 1992.
Significant revisions and additions were completed in the Fall of 1993
by Ellis Godard, consisting of setlists, show dates, corrections, and show
notes from scores of helpful netters, especially Brian Bettencourt, Ben
Miller, Mike Pollack, Harry McQuillen, Joe Rioux, and Patrick Sprowels.
Michael Weitzman took Ellis's revisions, cleaned up the data, added missing
shows and set lists, and made corrections. Mike Perrott, David Stoller,
and Ory Sandel contributed with setlist additions and corrections. This
updated version was then passed on to Alex Sutton, who made additional
changes and corrections, updated the original and cover song lists, and
formatted the HPB into a suitable-to-laser print Microsoft Word file, a
Postscript file, an RTF file, and an ASCII version. Revisions were further
made to keep it up to date by Mike Weitzman and Dan Shoop. Dan Hantman
standardized and properly formatted many song names and setlists, added links to reviews, and is
currently adding and updating errors and omissions as new information surfaces.
Please send all additions and/or errors you see to dan@www.phish.net.
If you submit setlists, please differentiate between ">" and "->".
">" indicates a start-stop segue - where they start quickly into the next
song. "->" indicates a true musical segue, when one song flows into
the other. I realize that this can be a judgement call in some cases
-- but that's okay! (Currently, the HPB mostly uses "->" in
all cases, but we're trying to be more accurate.)
Reviews History
Show reviews were included in HPB Version 5.0 (mostly 1998). Those reviews are now housed in the Phish.Review.Net, although they are still linked from the setlist files.
The reviews were originally compiled by Dan Schar for his old Review.Net
from the Phish Digests in the Phish.Net Archives, as well as from many individuals and other sources. Newer reviews were
collected from individuals and the newsgroup rec.music.phish.
Song reviews were collected from rec.music.phish
and the authors of the individual serial reviews by Dan Hantman (with a
few others by Josh Z.). Obviously, the content of each review is the
property of the indicated
author. Special thanks go to Charlie Dirksen, Benjy Eisen, Martin
Acaster, and Tim Wade for their help in supplying complete collections
of their respective reviews. Reviews for new and old shows are always
wanted (email to dws@www.phish.net).
Thanks to all who have contributed reviews to the Phish.Net for our reference
and reading pleasure.
