It’s amazing how even in the midst of their nadir – Vegas 2004 – among all the muck and slop and cringe-inducing Trey shot voice and ill-placed ballads and meanding jams,
you can still find moments of inspired brilliance. Exhibit A would be the set I closing Taste from 4/16/04. Ho…leee…cow, Trey is posessed. That strung-out, uncompressed tone works so well and he deftly jumps between that tone and the more liquid, open, enveloping tone. I mean just listen to the section from around 7:30 to 9:00, with the jaw-dropper high note at 8:45. But best of all, IMO, is the run he does immediately after that. Like 8:50-ish to 9:00. That is freaking DYNAMITE! And the finale before the outtro is a series of wailing, crying, bleeding, motherfucking hanuting bent notes. Wowzer!
I think Taste jams are best dark, brooding, and evil and this one has that in spades. I also think that is the best, most polished set of the run...which I realize isn't saying much at all.
also, the soundboards at that time were so pure and unfiltered (or sterile, if you like), with no extra audience mics for ambiance like you have nowadays -those things would normally be a major minus because it makes all the flubs and shot voice that much more noticeable, BUT Trey’s guitar comes out so clear and piercing loud, it’s like it’s mainlined right into your jugular. Page’s piano also sounds incredible in that mix.

When you hear about 2004, and people talk about how terrible a lot of it is, typically Vegas comes up as one of the low of the low. You listen to N1 and understand how that could very well be true. This show, however, is not the same as the day before. I would not call it an epic show. I may not even say it's an above average show as a whole. But it is an overall good show with some good versions of songs.
Seven Below starts things off on a much better note than the night before. It has a nice powerful little jam to it. Rock and Roll drifts of just a little into a nice tiny jam. The segue into Possum is pretty damn good. And Taste is above average to end the set.
A strong version of Jibboo starts off set 2. Twist has some nice exploration it picks up speed towards the end into some nice peaks. I would say that this Twist jam is one of those that may have been stretched longer than it should. But no matter it's still decent. The HYHU segment is one of the most obnoxious ones ever, but hey they tried something new there's nothing wrong with that. Wilson is above average with a cool Little Drummer Boy tease in it's center. Waves > Lifeboy is a fitting cool down segment to the set. Although Horse Silent in the Morning and Loving Cup kept the cool down longer than it should have.
The encore to me might be the highlight of the show. This is a very strong slightly extended Hood that goes into some very nice Type 2 action for a little while and moves into a great conclusion.
A nice bounce back show for the guys.

Big improvement from the night before, but yet another bunk non-Kuroda Phish experience. I had a lot of fun however, a friend of a friend got me into his box seats, meaning free food and BEER all show and easy piss access. I provided beers to my neighbors just outside the box, not an easy task with caterer/bartender/box security dude eyeballing me to make sure I didn't.
When Loving Cup came on it was ridiculous, the group who I'd provided beer to looked back at me with a big smile, too perfect. I was hammered so the song finally spoke to me which was good, cuz I wasn't the biggest fan of it prior (probably cuz I'd heard it too much).
I ate Nachos during Hood. Fun times.
