    Paul Shaffer gained fame as David Letterman’s late-night bandleader and saw the band play live on the show six times from 1994 through 2002. He happened to be present at Farm Aid and joined in the massive guest cavalcade for “Moonlight in Vermont,” “Will the Circle Be Unbroken?” “Amazing Grace” and “Uncloudy Day.” Phish saw Paul again three weeks later, performing on Letterman’s show on October 27, but another collaboration (Phish played “Birds of a Feather”) was not to be.
