10/3/07 - A musician who doesn't understand improv
Winonans writer Brandon Rompa suggests that Phish, like other jambands, "gives listeners the illusion of musical freedom and explosive creativity when it is actually just sound flowing aimlessly." Editorial comment: Rompa is either confusing free jazz (which lacks any structure whatsover) and the band-wide transitions of jambands, or is simply ignorant about the latter.

4/9/07 -
Trey due back in court.

Friday is also Blame Someone Else Day.

4/1/07 [NOTE DATE!] - Fishman arrested, Page next
Drummer Jon Fishman was arrested outside Whitehall, NY, this morning on his way home from a Dead show in Jones Beach, where he was taking pictures of his wife having an argument backstage. Arresting officer Richard O'Donnell-Chappelle observed Fishman riding his white 2005 Segway in the opposing lane. He then discovered that Fishman's ASCAP license had been revoked when he failed to respond to a August 1993 ticket for recording with J. Willis Pratt.

After Fishman passed several sobriety tests described as "not gentle with sensitive areas of the rock star's body", police searched the vehicle and discovered nine-year-old art photos of 60 pharmacists in a battle with members of the Hell's Angels. Fishman admitted to driving while under the influence of hash browns, which have since been identified as Tasty Cakes, and reportedly told O'Donnell-Chappelle, "You know what, I've got a problem and I've got to take care of it. Do you have any Immodium?"

Keyboardist Page McConnell, the only member of the band not yet arrested, will spend the summer in a studio composing and recording several unusual crimes to be produced and prosecuted this fall. Following decades with Phish, several years with Vida Blue, and short stints with the Allman Brothers Band, James Gang, and Al Qaeda, this will be McConnell's first solo criminal effort. Showcase exhibitions of the work are planned for several cities in the Northeast, followed by an immediate apology to fans and a quiet getaway to the Carribbean.

4/1/07 [NOTE DATE!] - Betty out of Beta
Phish staple "Betty", who has answered fan snail mail since it became too voluminous for Mike to handle, will now be licensed by the band for use by Fortune 500 companies. Betty proved to be an efficient and scalable solution to what had seemed a grotesque communications burden, a realization that came recently, in the wake of the breakup and the withering of tour revenue. Following six months of Beta testing, by competing fan clubs in the the wildly controversial thumbtack and paperclip industries, licensing to music fan clubs, grassroots political parties, and Lifestyle event planners will begin this week.

Phish will release a scaled-down retail version, iBetty, this fall as part of a suite of software allowing those who used to organize other aspects of their lives around Phish, to now allow Phish to organize all aspects of their lives.

4/1/07 [NOTE DATE!] - Page Tour Announced
Page has announced a summer tour opening for Norah Jones, including an unusual leg of shows stretching through the Canadian border states. Patrons are asked to arrive in dress casual, refrain from unruly verbal utterances, and uncork bottles only between songs.

4/1/07 - All Phishing a Hoax
The band Phish announced today that the worldwide fear of computer-related crime has been unfounded, as every single instance of apparent frauds known as "phishing" have simply been part of an elaborate marketing ploy on behalf of the band. Bassist Mike Gordon reportedly bought some film with two of the credit cards, "just to make it seem legit", but no charges were filed in those instances, since the apparent victims were Danny Bonaduce and Michael Bolton.

The hoax was reportedly brought to a halt in order to mend relationships between th band's management and several national banks, whose financial assistance will be needed in order to mount the reunion tour planned for Summer of 2008. Turnout for that tour is expected to require the construction of new, super-sized stadiums nationwide, as well as on-site...uh...something about...wookies... oh, forget it. Happy April Fool's Day.

3/30/07 - Page tour announced
Page will promote his new solo album (Page McConnell, due out April 17) with a 13-date tour stretching from Burlington's Higher Ground on May 30, through MA, RI, PA, NY, DC, GA, NC, OH, IN, MI, and IL, ending at the Pantages Theatre in Minneapolis on June 14. Page's band includes Adam Zimmon, Jared Slomoff, Rob O'Dea, and Gabe Jarrett. 3/29/07 - Trey @ SOB?
Christina Durfee (one of Trey's backup singers the last few tours, and part of the Phil/Trey ensemble @ Vegoose) is listing on her myspace page that she is playing the Phil and Friends shows at Sounds of Brazil, the 450-standing capacity club in the west village, a week from Mon/Tuesday. That's far from official news that Trey will be there, but a either a good hint or a strong tease.

3/29/07 - Fish picks Manix
Drummer Jon Fishman was a judge at the Vermont Youth Orchestra "Battle of the Bands" at Higher Ground in South Burlington. The winning act, The Manix, won the chance to perform as an opening band at Nectar's in Burlington and an invitation to perform in the Burlington First Night Battle of the Bands. 3/8/07 - Amfibian on the way!

2/27/07 - Trey pleads not guilty
Photo Trey courtesy of www.icecreamman.comTrey attended his arraigment hearing with wife Sue today, having instructed his attorney "not to fight the charges", according to the Burlington Free Press, which reports his attorney Steve Coffey as saying he had told him, "I’m here to face the consequences and work it out with the court and go on with my life." He plead not guilty, however, was released on bail, and is scheduled to return to Washington County Court on March 27.

2/?/07 - 11/14/95 Audio and Video released!
Phish has released the University of Central Florida Arena show, in video and audio, via the growing LivePhish.com catalog, featuring "crystal clear, mastered soundboard audio". Get the full show in MP3s for 9.95, FLAC files for $12.95, or fifteen videos for $19.95. The videos will play on any player that supports MPEG-4, and users can freely transfer videos onto popular portable video players, including Apple's video iPod. Other recent released include 12/29/07 at Madison Square Garden; and the historic "Headphones Jam", recorded near the beginning of the Undermind album sessions (and from which proceeds go to Ocean's Harbor House in New Jersey)

2/14/07 - Trey indicted on 7 counts
The Burlington Free Press has reported that Trey has been indicted on seven counts - three felonies, three misdemeanors, and a traffic violatoin and faces up to 14 years in prison.

2/6/07 - Trey Speaks
Trey will host a Q&A tomorrow night at the 92nd St Y in NYC, scheduled prior to his bust and already sold out but could be interesting. (This editor would ask if he's written anything since December 15th and, if so, what he can say about it.)

2/6/07 - DryGoods sale
We try to stick with news and not be marketers, but several DryGoods (Phish merchandise) items are noteworthy. First, there are several dozen new items that may be of interest. Second, there's a big sale, up to 50% off and some items (mostly stickers, but also includes Mike's OutsideOut video) as low as $1.

2/2/07 - Trey indicted on a felony!
Photo Trey courtesy of www.icecreamman.comA Washington County, NY, grand jury filed a felony drug possession charge against Trey yesterday. The degree of the charge is not yet public, but represents an upgrade from misdemeanor criminal possession of a controlled substance and indicates a grand jury finding that there was sufficient evidence for the DA to bring a felony case.

As reported earlier (see below), Trey was arrested December 15th with 60 pills (prescribed to someone else) and heroin, after crossing into the wrong lane, while driving with a license that had been suspended because he failed to show up for a previous court date.

1/5/07 - Details @ Smoking Gun
The Smoking Gun has posted the "Supporting Deposition" (the arrest report) with details of Trey's being stopped, field tested, and interviewed at the station.

1/3/07 - Too high to get over?
Photo Trey courtesy of www.icecreamman.comTrey, who performed Michael Jackson's "Wanna Be Startin' Somethin'" as his first song of 2007, apparently also had heroin in the car when he was stopped and will probably need to go through rehab to avoid jail time.

That Jackson tune's final lyrics provide some topical self-help, and perhaps constitute Trey acknowledging and owning his drug problem as steps towards resolving it: "Lift your head up high and scream out to the world, 'I know I am someone', and let the truth unfurl."

6/6/07 - He didn't even try?
