12/29/05 - 500 Phishless Days :-(
In his announcement of the "breakup", Trey said, "For the sake of clarity, I should say that this is not like the hiatus, which was our last attempt to revitalize ourselves." This attempt might prove to be shorter:

After five hundred days since the last (?) Phish show, rumors persist of a fall 2006 reunion October 28 & 29 at the Philly Spectrum, and 30th & 31st at MSG. If those rumors are true, there are only 302 more days until more Phish -- and a second hiatus of only 802 days, 13 days shorter than the official "hiatus" which lasted the 815 days from 10/7/00 to 12/31/02. Also, coincidentally (?), 802 is the area code for Vermont!

12/28/05 - Trey's AOL Interview
Trey did an exclusive interview, plus acoustic performances from Shine, at the AOL offices, which are now available online.

12/27/05 - New Esther video site up
Scott Nybakken (pheedback@nyc.rr.com), the artist who created the video for "Esther" that was shown 7-19-91 at the Somerville show during the setbreak, and which circulates (lightly?) on VHS, has put together a website which includes artwork from the video, the history of its compilations and other information about it.

12/19/05 - AOL streams MSG
AOL Music is streaming the 12/31/95 MSG release that comes out tomorrow (12/20).

12/16/06 - Trey & Mike write new tunes?
Asked by the Citizen-Times whether there will be "a full Phish reunion" at the coming Warren Haynes show, during which Trey and Mike will perform in a trio with Bill Kreutzman, Warren answered: I don't think so. Mike (Gordon) and Trey (Anastasio) will play together with Bill Kreutzmann of the Grateful Dead. It's special to get (Gordon and Anastasio) together. (They) will show up with new material and plan a show around the chemistry of the trio.

The show will be streamed by WNCW.

12/16/05 - Bring Back Phish continues!
BringPhishBack.com has nearly 1,000 electronic signatures for its "petition to bring Phish back", and has declared Jan. 1st, 2006 as the "1st annual Bring Phish Back Day ... encouraging everyone to wear a 'Please Come Back' shirt and listen to as much Phish as possible on this day". Site founder James Jenkins even wrote a theme song, titled "Please Come Home", available for free via download from the site.

12/13/05 - Phish sightings on AMC, VH1
During Jaws on the American Movie Classics television channel (and probably other times as well), a 15-second commercial montage for the network featured Trey’s single "Shine" as the background music, with the album credits at the bottom of the screen.

"Down with Disease"was used as the backround music for a segment in VH1's "100 Greatest Child Stars" just as they are talking about Jan Brady at #61.

12/12/05 - Yes, we've heard. No, nothing official.
We don't normally post rumors here, but are putting this here in part to stop the deluge of ""Oh, my god - have you heard?" emails. :)

Phish has registered a new domain (as of 11/29/05), www.jemprecords.com, with JEMP presumably standing for Jon Ernest Mike Page. It isn't clear whether this is a new label, a new company, or just a site to promo the MSG 12/31/95 release.

The rumor part (as discussed on PT and ohkeepa) is that "Dionysian Productions and JEMP" has purportedly reserved MSG for 10/28/06 and 10/29, and the Philly Spectrum for 10/31/06. Further rumors contend word of a summer 2006 tour. But there is no official confirmation of any of this show news, and at least one source denies that such events are being planned - though does not deny the possiblity of a reunion. As indicated by Trey in recent interviews (that he is "not ruling out playing with Mike, Page and Fish") and in informal conversations (that they are "working on logistics of a Phish comeback") suggest that a reunion is inevitable, though perhaps not imminent.

12/11/05 - TruthMag MSG Giveaway
Truth Explosion Magazine is holding a contest to win the 3-CD 12/31/95 show being released 12/20.

12/9/05 - MSG E-Cards
The release of 12/31/95 on CD is 11 days away, and the promo work is heating up. Rhino has two e-cards, one on the audio/video board and quiz that unlocks exclusive audio. Press release says in part: Widely regarded as one of Phish's finest live performances and called one of the "Greatest Concerts of the '90s" by Rolling Stone, their 1995 New Year's Eve show at Madison Square Garden is an amazing collection of the band's finest songs. Just in time to celebrate the 10-year anniversary of one of the band's proudest musical moments, the entire show will be featured on the Rhino Entertainment release PHISH: NEW YEAR'S EVE 1995 LIVE AT MADISON SQUARE GARDEN. The three-disc set is available December 20 at regular retail outlets and at www.rhino.com and www.phish.com for a suggested price of $29.98.
This collection includes the complete three-set show totaling 27 tracks and more than three and a half hours of prime Phish. Although several official live Phish albums are available, NEW YEAR'S EVE 1995 is the first to feature one of the band's hallmark New Year's Eve concerts. Guitarist Trey Anastasio, drummer Jon Fishman, bassist Mike Gordon, and keyboardist Page McConnell demonstrate their legendary musical skills while effortlessly navigating Phish's vast repertoire, including several interesting cover songs, theatrical stunts, and an extended narration by Anastasio about his fabled musical thesis "Gamehendge."

12/8/05 - Trey's Grammy nomination
The Best Pop Instrumental Performance category includes Herbie Hancock Featuring Trey Anastasio for "Gelo Na Montanha" (Hancock also received a Best Pop Collaboration With Vocals nod for "A Song For You" with Christina Aguilera.)

12/8/05 - Shapiro on Sirius
Phish archivist Kevin Shapiro will be on Sirius Satellite Radio statio Jam_ON tomorrow night (Friday 12/9/05) at 7 pm EST for a 90-minute New Year's Eve 1995 - Live at Madison Square Garden preview hosted by Jonathan Schwartz.

12/7/05 - Sighting in Spin
Spin Top 20 on pg 33 reads, "This month - #6,   last month - 42 - california's anti-phishing laws:   we dont like jam-bands either,   but this is outrageous

12/5/05 - Prince Caspian, the movie
Upcoming release The Lion, The Witch, and the Wardrobe will start a series of film version from C.S. Lewis' Chronicles of Narnia books. The second film, based on the second book (Prince Caspian), will come next year. (Note: Caspian was written second and traditionally marketed that way, although some publishers have numbered it "#4" in their suggested reading order, at least one even establishing it 4th chronologically.)

11/29/05 - Trey interview
Artisan News has posted a video interview with Trey from Vegoose. Followup 12/2/05, 2 stories: 1, 2.

11/28/05 - Trey Loves Phish
In a new Relix interview, Trey explains: "There is a lot of stuff you didn’t see in the organization. John Paluska, our manager, would call me up and say ‘I can’t get anything done when you are not here, because it is your job to champion an idea, even if it wasn’t yours. We work as a democracy but you are the speaker of the house. Mike tried out for the band. I built The Barn. I gave a lot of things and I tried as hard as I could to make decisions. I said this during the Charlie Rose interview and I’m sure it’s true today: Nobody loves Phish more than me. Nobody."

11/26/05 - AIM interview with Trey
AOL Music has posted an interview with Trey conducted via AIM. An audio interview will follow soon.

11/25/05 - Mike and Leo on NPR

The Oh Kee Pa Message Board community has reached 500 members, having doubled in less than three months!

11/18/05 - Anti-Trey Graffiti in Albany
Someone spray-painted the glass doors of the venue for last night's Albany show, including "Fuck you Trey", "Fuck the Lizards", "Here's your fucking helping friendly book", "Fuck Wilson", "Fuck Aaron Wolfe" among other things. 1, 2, 3.

11/17/05 - Trey admits drugs broke up Phish
In a story in the Times Unioin, Trey says, among other things: "I thought it went without saying how deep into our scene hard drugs had gone. ... I always thought our scene was so transparent, that everybody knew everything. ... Once we let our guard down around 1998, the scene started to eat itself and there was a massive loss of perspective."

In the New York Times story, he addresses post-Coventry in more detail: "Sobriety is a f------ relief is what it is. It affects you positively in every possible way that you can imagine, 'cause it's YOU. ...and now I'm here to tell you that hey, any feeling you're trying to achieve using hard drugs you're gonna achieve through sobriety. Everybody I know that got off that s---, they all say the same thing."

A limited ticket pre-sale is available through Mike Gordon's secure online ticketing system now, before they go on sale to the public. Additional tickets will go on sale to the public beginning Friday, November 26.

11/16/05 - Mike added to XMas Jam
The XMas Jam in Asheville, NC, will now be Trey and Mike, not just Trey.

11/15/05 - Sony/BMG smacked down, backs down
Sony has suspended production of the evil CDS (see below) and recalled those sold. The recall reportedly will cost the company tens of millions of dollars.

11/15/05 - Trey adds Russ, Jen picks up trumpet
As seen the WXPN webcast of Trey's show last night, Russ Remington has joined the band, and Jen is playing trumpet again.

11/14/05 - Billy Breathes among worst album covers ever?
Pitchfork’s has posted The Worst Record Covers of All Time, including this snippet: "Editorial has contractually obligated me to include this cover in an effort to even out this album's inclusion on Pitchfork's Beta-Version Best of the 1990s list. Oh... that's been completely wiped from the site? Heh. Nevermind. We had, uh, Jesus Lizard there. No, wait, it was a Finnish proto-neo Lapland-laptop folk record. Yeah, totally.&uquot; [Thanks to Craig Nathanson]

11/13/05 - Leo sits in with Spam
Page sat in with the Spam Allstars all last night at Nectar's, in Burlington Mike was present but didn't perform.

11/12/05 - Umm... no... but almost?
Mike and Jon played with Trey last night, 11/11/05, in Utica. The show included acoustic duets by Mike and Trey on Access Me, Divided Sky (also with Fishman), Get Back on the Train, and Bathtub Gin > Ghost; followed by a Boogie on Reggae Woman with Trey on electric, Mike, Jon, and all of 70 Volt Parade. That's right - 3 of 4 Phish members for Divided Sky and Boogie On!

Related, Trey recently talked about a possible Mike/Trey tour in an interview with KFOG. Hmm...

11/11/05 - Is the breakup over after only 453 days?!?
Rumors that Fishman and Gordon will play with Trey at his show tonite are addressed on Mike's current answering machine (212-330-9092) message, where he reports they'll be on the guestlist, less than 72 hours after Page played with Trey. Too big of a gap for a reunion, but getting closer.

Update: Two unconfirmed but different reports that Page is in Uttica, too.

11/10/05 - WARNING: Shine & 66 Steps dangerous!
Many recent releases from Sony/BMG (which owns Columbia), when played in a computer (Macs, too), will install a "rootkit" of kernel extensions, essentially a hacker invasion which allows monitoring of your PC. Worse, the rootkit makes itself invisible, safe from virus protection software, and thus open for malicious exploitation by hackers. (At least one virus, Stinx-e, already makes use of the Sony malware.) Worse still, manually uninstalling the rootkit will prevent your CD drive from playing any discs. And if that wasn't enough, the software includes a frightening (or is it laughable?) end-user license agreement (EULA).

The artists themselves reportedly did not give permission, and Sony is defending this intentional malware on several grounds but is being opposed already by at least two lawsuits. David Pogue wrote in the New York Times, "Personally, I can't understand why any music fan would buy one of these discs. If you really want a song from Sony BMG, why not just buy it from one of the online music stores and avoid the whole issue? Sony BMG would soon get the message that customers don't like being treated like criminals."

11/18/05 update: According to at least one report, running Sony's uninstaller introduces an even worse security hole that leaves you wide open to attack if you use Internet Explorer.

11/9/05 - Page plays w/ Trey
Trey performed a three-song (Strange Design, Waves, and Waste) duet with Page as an encore to the 11/8/05 show at New York's Roseland Ballroom, followed by the full (70 Volt Parade) band plus Page, John Medeski, and Peter Apfelbaum on sax for First Tube.

11/8/05 - Trey on Letterman Friday
Trey (presumably with 70 Volt Parade) will reportedly appear on Dave Letterman Friday, 11/11/05, Conan O'Brian's show the following Friday (11/18/05), and Craig Kilborn's show the Friday after that (11/25/05).

11/8/05 - Cometician's Day
Edmond Halley would be 349 today if people, you know, lived that long.

11/7/05 - Bring Back Phish!
Yet another website has started pushing for Phish's return. There's been previous petitions, other cafepress sites with merch (e.g. www.cafepress.com/missphish), and of course plenty of folks addressing the (sometimes shifting) litany of reasons Trey's given for the breakup, but www.bringphishback.com does each of those and a bit more. There are some Google adword links, and the cafepress element may be for profit (missphish proceeds go to the Mockingbird Foundation), but we can't help but cheer on cheerleaders for a reunion.

And it's not a lost cause. It's not. Stop saying that it is. It isn't. Really. They could come back. No, really, they could.

11/7/05 - Brooklyn DVD update... sorta...
There's a registered UPC code, and Amazon lists a 12/20/05 release date.

11/4/05 - Lefsetz digs at Trey again
Regarding Bruce Springsteen's newest album and tour, industry big whig Bob Lefetz wrote, "it appears his audience really only wants to see him with the E Street Band. Funny, isn't it. ... You think you're the star, and you are, but they want the brand name. Just check Trey Anastasio's numbers without Phish."

11/3/05 - Trey rejects certainty about breakup's permanency
In a 10/31 story in the Illinois Entertainer, when asked"So keep all Phish questions at bay, because they're not getting back together anytime soon . . . right?". Trey is quoted as answering, "It's so funny that nobodys asked me that! We're definitely not now, and I would never do that because it was all the rage. All I'll say to that is I've said so many stupid things in the past, that have come out of my mouth, if theres one thing I'm finally starting to learn is I don't know whats going to happen. But I'd like to play music for a long time and I love those guys. Who knows?" [Editors note: 12/31/06! 12/31/06! 12/31/06!]

11/1/05 - Trey is a four-letter name
In reviewing Shine, Rollling Stone says, "Jam Nation still needs jams, and former Phish leader Trey Anastasio is sure to provide them -- just not on his sixth solo album"; describes him on the album as "a middle-aged dude with a shaky voice and gentle tune-sense playing low-affect songs"; and says the lyrical "musings are like the gentle reassurances of an old friend -- one without too much to say."

The review headline bestows upon Mr. Anastasio the distinction - shared with Cher, Madonna, and Jesus - of now being sufficiently known as to be identifiable by a single name, Trey.

11/1/05 - AOL streaming Shine (free!)
AOL.com is streaming Trey's new album Shine - the entire CD, or song-by-song, your choice, for free, all week.

10/31/05 - Brooklyn DVD delayed (?)
Though there's no official news yet, one site is now listing 3/7/06 s the release date for the Brooklyn 2004 DVD.

10/30/05 - Short Trey Interviews
The Daily Page 10/28: "Phish was the grand experiment in friendship and group interplay. It was amazing. I wouldn't change a thing. Those guys, we're still incredibly close. We talk on the phone all the time."

Star Tribune 10/28: "John Lennon is the model for what I'm trying to do; that he grew and changed.... It's been hard because you left your friends and I don't see them very much anymore, but look what happened with [Lennon] and those albums. They were struggling to progress beyond the greatest band that ever existed."

ABC/Billboard 10/29: "During a break from recording his first album since his band Phish called it quits, guitarist/vocalist Trey Anastasio received some sage advice from Bruce Springsteen: 'As soon as you become celebrated for something, that's the point where it becomes crystallized," the Boss said. 'And that's when you have to change.'"

And, the Napa Valley Register 10/29 asked, rhetorically, "Is this the beginning of an even better, exciting musical adventure or just the post-Phish rebound disc?"

10/28/05 - Trey thinks much of Shine
In a recent interview, Trey compared his new album Shine to Joni Mitchell's Blue, Rod Stewart's Tonight's the Night, and Van Morrison's Astral Weeks. Granted, it was in the vein of emphasizing the importance of voice to these albums, not comparisons of anything else (artistic merit, commercial success, whatever) but we're still resisting sarcasm. ;)

10/27/05 - Phish's IT on Comcast
If you get the INHD channels, they are showing the IT PBS special starting tonight on INHD2: 10/27 at 11PM EST; and 10/29 at 10AM EST and 5PM EST. "Shot in breathtaking high-definition video, the program combines exclusive interviews interwoven with live material. The program was produced by an award-winning production team, including producer/director Mary Wharton, 2003 Grammy award-winner for her documentary "Legend" on the life of singer Sam Cooke and the editing team of Thom Zimny, who won an Emmy for his work on Bruce Springsteen's "Live in New York City" and editor Alex Hall. The concert footage was directed by Eli Tishberg, a veteran of several Phish projects and who also recently directed Phish's Keyspan Park theater simulcast in June. Also part of the production team is sound engineer and five-time Grammy Award winner Elliot Scheiner, a pioneer in 5.1 technology, who mixed both the stereo and surround sound tracks.

10/26/05 - Lefsetz rips Trey a new one
In his 10/26 mailing list post, music industry commentator Bob Lefsetz suggests "Trey's delusional. He thinks he's actually going to have a hit. Yeah, right. As if a decade plus of history hasn't disproved THAT theory. ...

"The only people interested in buying 'Shine' are fans. And based on the tour numbers Trey's putting up, that's a dwindling base. Because Phishheads perceive that Trey broke up the band on a whim. That it was presented as a group decision, but really wasn't. And they're unhappy about it. ...

"I say bring the old team back. Which Trey will eventually do anyway. Once he finds out that people aren't interested in his solo works, just the brand. Own it. You don't get everything you want in life. ...

"Believe in yourself Trey. Be the guiding light for musicianship. Show us a new way. To build an independent enterprise outside the corrupt major system. This is who we thought you were. We were wrong..." (elipses used liberally) Ouch.

10/26/05 - Trey Day on JamOn
Trey will be a guest DJ on SIRIUS Satellite Radio on JamOn (channel 17, the "jambands" channel) for 17 consecutive hours (7am to 12 midnight, EST) on November 1st. He'll "choose and host all of the music selections, including all 12 tracks on his brand-new album Shine, being released the same day. ... SIRIUS will also broadcast an exclusive, live solo performance by Trey Anastasio on Wednesday, November 2 at 9 pm ET on channel 18, The Spectrum, and then again on Friday, November 4 at 12 pm ET on channel 17, Jam On."

10/24/05 - You are a listless pod
Denver Post's David Harsanyi besmirches Phish, Phish fans, and marijuana users all in the same diatribe. To correct any of his misassociations, email him at dharsanyi@denverpost.com.

10/24/05 - Legislators consider crafting phish net
Editor's rant: The use of "phishing" to refer to a particularly vile form of email fraud was tiring enough. Now the solutions tend to besmirch the brand "phish net", too. Riles me enough that I've used "besmirch" twice. Grrr.

Marty St. Louis, "best hockey player on earth", speaks highly of Phish.

10/18/05 - Trey concedes he might have been wrong
In an interview on Q104.3 in NYC today, Trey performed "Shine" and "Tuesday" acoustically, then engaged in an interview in which he first recounted the many reasons for the breakup then recanted a bit, noting that the Rolling Stones have gone from being disappointing in the 80s (Steel Wheels) to having a lot of love on the stage, and added, "So I could be wrong, I guess. I could sit and talk for hours about all the times I've been wrong."

10/17/05 - NYE 95, at last!

"I don't think the pure essence of the place can be wiped away by natural disaster." Trey added in a statement on his web site "New Orleans is in trouble, so music itself is in trouble...anything we can all do now to help is crucial. If you love music, please do whatever you can."

And don't miss Andy Gadiel's interview with Mike on Jambase.

9/13/05 - Carlos says Trey needs a break
Interviewed in the September/October Relix, Carlos Santana says, "There's a world that Trey Anastasio and all the other musicians, Ben Harper, you know, Warren Haynes, need to discover outside of music. Put the damn guitar down for a while, man. It's like a tape, scratched record, playing the same thing. How you gonna play something if you don't put it down and discover new flowers and new children and new colors? Groucho Marx was right: You gotta know when to take the cigar out of your mouth. That's what happened to Jimi and those guys. They didn't have the space between them and Jimi Hendrix. Put it down, man. It's not gonna go away, you're not gonna forget it, people not gonna notice you haven't played in three days. It's like, take a deep breath, man, go out to Point Reyes, go to Mount Tamalpais, man, you see a hawk flying - when you come back and you pick up the guitar, it'll have innocence and purity."

The auction features a large assortment of artwork and music memorabilia, including many signed items and several ticket/pass packages. It is no coincidence the auction has a heavy String Cheese Incident influence, as SCI and the Madison House family has been one of the strongest supporters of both Conscious Alliance and the Mimi Fishman Foundation over the last several years. In addition to music related items, artwork has been donated by Scramble Campbell and Stanley Mouse.

Remniscent of Dark Side of the Moon's eerie synchronicity with The Wizard of Oz, but with the youthful irreverence that always was Phish, several message boards are reporting that the music and lyrics of Round Room seem to be synchronized precisely to the activity and character movements in the MacCauley Culkin theatrical masterpiece Home Alone.  Note date!

2/16/05 - Trey at Tibet House
Trey played with Choclate Genius, Marc Annthony Thompson's three-song set - a little bluesy but mellow number with a Trey solo solo, and the third with a more phishy spacey high note solo. All three had the Scorchio Quartet. Then Trey stayed on stage for three acoustic numbers all with quartet and a piano accompaniment. First piece was more orchestrated, with Trey singing faintly (I have no clue what he was singing about, very faint and high pitched).  Quartet and paino were fully involved along some regular acoustic playing, more composed song (which Philip Glass mentioned the pianist had a hand in). Trey had two acoustic guitars next to him and at the beginning of this song he switched guitars i.e. unplugged it and plugged in the new one and began again while everybody was still playing. Second song was more of a "bouncey" phish song, the guitar work on the acoustic was more pronounced, sounded like it could be a jamming song, with the chorus "Love is Freedom, we know that Love is Freedom" I believe I got that right, he finished repeating it a lot.  But it was definitely more of a phish type song with some jamming chords. Third was Flock of Words, with Nellie Mckay (who already performed that evening) on backing and a flutist, along with quartet and piano.  Trey had to restart it because he had the wrong guitar and had to reswitch. So he got nervous and started talking while unplugging and replugging.  Said he was making a big showbiz error by restarting a song (and playing with the wrong guitar) also said he was happy to be called again to play the benefit, crowd got louder yelled we love you, he said we love you too and Flock of Words proceeded without a hitch. Well done, nice with the full ensemble. Then for the finale People have the Power with Patti Smith, as usual, Trey was at a mic in the middle of Ray Davies and Lou Reed (have to say that was cool), then Trey put his one arm around one of the monks that came to the mic, that as cool to, bringing him more to the front and finally Trey was talking a lot to Lou as well. [Thanks to Kaz for the report!].

2/4/05 - Trey performs in Atlanta
Trey performed two sets at a recording studio in Roswell (north of Atlanta) to an audience of several hundred. backed by a five piece band including two keyboardists, Ray Paczkowski and Les Hall (Howie Day). He played two sets, each a bit over an hour, of upbeat material said to be akin to "1991 PHish" The first set ended with four solo acoustic songs, including "18 Steps" (which was also played as electric during the second set) and an emotional version of "Strange Design". Other new tunes included "Gloomy Skies," "Goodbye Head" and "Air Said To Me." [Paraphrased from news on Jambands.com]

All proceeds from this event will be matched by Dave Matthews Band and will go to the Bama Works Village Recovery Fund. "The scope & breadth of this disaster are beyond comprehension," says moe. guitarist Al Schnier. "As musicians on the other side of the world, we can't help feeling a bit helpless. Our hope is to contribute in some small way to help reestablish the communities damaged in the wake of these recent storms."

In the wake of one of the most devastating natural disasters in modern history, the Dave Matthews Band created the Bama Works Village Recovery Fund to identify an affected village on the east coast of Sri Lanka, partnering with them on a long-term basis to rebuild their community.

The event is also endorsed by HeadCount, which reports it "will continue to support important causes and charity events featuring HeadCount artists" and that it "strongly encourages you to attend this very special event" - as do we!

1/1/05 - Mike shreds w/ the Duo
Mike TORE IT UP with the Benevento/Russo Duo on a four-run mini-tour from 12/28-31/04. The first show, at Philly's Theater of the Living Arts ("TLA") was a fan favorite, but the others were recorded with multi-track equipment (ie.. "multi-tracked") so one or two of those may be released. ... But find the TLA show (too) - it's worth it!!
