11/1/04 - Harmless Halloween Hijinx, or Tease of Dubious Taste?
During their Halloween show last night in Portland, OR, Umphrey's McGee played a medley of songs referencing recent cases of purported pedophilia by well-known musicians, including Michael Jackson (who's reportedly paid tens of millions to avoid trials regarding sleeping arrangements with young boys) and Pete Townsend (who explained having surfed the net for child porn as having been doing research on an important issue).

The medley ended with a short, perhaps only three-second, tease of the beginning of Mike's Song, making an off-color funny of the reports of a year ago or so regarding since-withdrawn accusations that photos Mike Gordon took backstage at a non-Phish concert were in some way inappropriate. (Though note that Jackson has not been convicted, and Townsend was cleared.)

Those in attendence insist that it was a brief, funny bit that was best understood at the event and may not convey well beyond the event. Some defenders of Phish are understandably angered by the choice of humor, but Umphrey's has issued an apology - and is, you should know, a smokin' act about whom there's a recent and growing buzz for good reason.

Also, they request, keep in mind their odd sense of humor, evident even in their album titles - the first of which was Greatest Hits Volume III. They also share our interest in funding music education, and will =performed a benefit for Save the Music on December 10th at Irving Plaza.

10/31/04 - Demand a ballot recount!
Satellite music service Sirius held a phone vote of listeners to "elect a new head [get it?] of state". The winner will be played all day long on Sirius Jam, a purportedly (and mostly) jambands channel, one of 65 the service offers. In a race between Phish and the Grateful Dead, the Dead reportedly won. Email Sirius and tell them you want a recount, or an absentee ballot! The Dead are fine, sure, but we want a full day of PHISH on Tuesday, either as we celebrate victory or fall back in shock. This is a heated, energetic, full-of-fire election. It's soundtrack's gotta have fire! :)

10/29/04 - Don't Forget to Vote!
Trey asked in a HeadCount PSA, and we're asking now - be sure to vote next Tuesday, regardless of who or what you're voting for. JUST DO IT!

For more information, see www.vpr.net.

10/7/04 - Verizon charges at Coventry?
If you use Verizon and made calls at Coventry, you may have roaming charges for calls that were routed through Quebec (Canada) even if Vermont is within your call area. (And thanks to Jim Kapp for the info!)

1/12/04 - Phish to Return to Studio Next Month
As reported in the Burlington Free Press: "Fresh off its well-received, yearlong comeback following a two-year hiatus, Phish will next month head into the studio to record with Grammy-winning engineer Tchad Blake, who has lent his distinctive touch to acclaimed albums by Sheryl Crow, Los Lobos, Tom Waits, Soul Coughing and The Bad Plus. Blake will then mix the album, tentatively scheduled for release this summer (most likely followed by a tour), at world music-influenced pop star Peter Gabriel's Real World Studios in England. "That's really exciting for us," Phish keyboardist Page McConnell said in a recent phone interview. "We've been working with a lot of the same folks over the last three or four albums, so it's nice to have someone who's going to have new opinions and fresh perspectives."

1/9/04 - New Amfibian Album: From the Ether
Amfibian is back, and with a new album, taboot! Tom Marshall, longtime Trey collaborator and Phish lyricist, has re-formed his band with a completely new cast, including Anthony Krizan (Lenny Kravitz, Spin Doctors) on guitar. The ensemble has recorded a disc called "From the Ether" featuring 15 new tracks. The mostly upbeat album sounds like the Beatles now and then, and Pink Floyd as well. Tom and co-writer/keyboardist Chris Metaxas penned all the songs except "Lambertville," which was written by Tom and Trey in 2002. (Note that this is the first actual Amfibian album, as Tom's previous project "Amfibian Tales" was actually released under the billing "Tom Marshall & Co.")

The official release is coming soon, along with a full update on Amfibian.com. Look for a handful of shows from the band sometime this winter or spring. For now, you can get your hands on the disc via Phish Dry Goods.
