Fall 2001 Special Appearances

Vida Blue, featuring Page McConnell (with special appearances by Trey and Mike)
12/31/01 Roseland Ballroom - New York, NY

Set: Jam 4, Bubblehead, Jam 15, Piano Mel, Get Ready (Pay by the Pound?), Peg -> Auld Lang Syne -> Instant Karma, Colin Jones, Ballentine
E: America the Beautiful, Light Up or Leave Me Alone

Notes: Vida Blue is Page McConnell of Phish, Oteil Burbridge of the Allman Brothers Band, and Russell Batiste of the Funky Meters. Midnight was celebrated with KISS-like pyrotechnics and a balloon drop. Page did not play on "America the Beautiful"; Oteil dedicated the song to New York because "they'd been through a lot this year." "Light Up or Leave Me Alone" featured Trey Anastasio and Mike Gordon of Phish, both playing Languedoc guitars (Mike on a new one recently built for him by Paul, and Trey on the older, butterscotch colored one of his). Phish lighting director Chris Kuroda manned the light board, and Phish soundman Paul Languedoc served as front- of-house engineer. Bullfrog and Kid Koala opened.

Thanks to ZZYZX, Hal Waterman, and Rob Johnson. If you have any corrections or additions, please email dan@www.phish.net.

Vida Blue, featuring Page McConnell
12/30/01 Higher Ground - Winooski, VT

Set: ?, ? -> Jam -> ??, ?!?, ?! -> Light Up or Leave Me Alone
E: Instant Karma

Notes: Vida Blue is Page McConnell of Phish, Oteil Burbridge of the Allman Brothers Band, and Russell Batiste of the Funky Meters. The Billionaires opened.

Thanks to Henry Sieff. If you have any corrections or additions, please email dan@www.phish.net.

Pork Tornado - Jon Fishman side project
12/28/01 Higher Ground - Winooski, VT

This show was cancelled.

Notes: Pork Tornado is a side project of Phish drummer Jon Fishman. The rest of the band is made up of Dan Archer on guitar, Phil Abair on keyboards, Aaron Hershey on bass, and Joe Moore on saxophone and vocals.

Zambiland Orchestra, featuring Mike Gordon and many, many others
12/22/01 Variety Playhouse - Atlanta, GA

Notes: Phish bassist Mike Gordon joined the Zambiland Orchestra last night (Saturday, December 22) at the Variety Playhouse in Atlanta, Georgia. Zambiland is an ensemble group assembled for a special jam session each year during the holidays, and has previously featured drummer Jon Fishman. This year's cast included members of Aquarium Rescue Unit, Blueground Undergrass, Project Z, Yonrico Scott Band, Larry Keel Band, and Swami Gone Zambinanas, with the whole bit conducted by Lincoln Metcalf.

Mike sat in with a specially-assembled group known as the "Zambi Corps of Engineers" (featuring Billy Constable and Rev. Jeff Mosier on banjo, Johnny Mosier on guitar, Jeff Sipe on drums, Oteil Burbridge on bass, Gary "El Buho" Gazaway on trumpet, Vince Herman and John Cowan on vocals, Jeff Coffin and Bryan Lopes on saxophones, as well as Col. Bruce Hampton, Danny Barnes, Tye North, and Derek Jones -- ??). This group was also introdued as the "John Cowan All Stars." Just as they were about to start, Mike appeared on stage with his bass; Rev. Mosier traded him for a banjo (and grabbed a set of spoons), and the two sat at the front of the stage together. John Cowan apparently introduced Mike as "Earl Scruggs," and they launched into a rendition of "Steam Powered Aeroplane." Mike switched back to bass, and the group played "Sittin' on Top of the World."

Next, the original line-up of the Aquarium Rescue Unit took the stage, with Mike and others joining in toward the end (?). After a short break, Rev. Jeff Mosier, Col. Bruce Hampton, Johnny Mosier, Jim Hadley on washboard/etc., Larry Keel on guitar, El Buho, Jeff Sipe, and several percussionistt took the stage -- with Felix Pastorius and Mike on bass. They played "Working on a Building" and "Nellie Kane." Several extended jams followed. The event closed with Lincoln Metcalf leading everyone in "We Wish You a Zambi Christmas."

This is obviously a very confusing event to document; if you have corrections or additions, please email dan@www.phish.net.

Thanks to Jake Pelham.

Warren Haynes Christmas Jam, with Mike Gordon and other special guests
12/21/01 Asheville Civic Center - Asheville, NC

Notes: Phish bassist Mike Gordon joined a slew of other special guests at the Warren Haynes Christmas Jam. The event featured performances by Drivin' n' Cryin', Blues Traveler, Phil and Friends, as well as Haynes' own Gov't Mule. Mike joined Gov't Mule on bass during their renditions of "Banks of the Deep End" and "Time To Confess."

"The Power Of Music" Forum, featuring Trey Anastasio, Bob Weir, and more
11/29/01 Bushnell Center for the Performing Arts - Hartford, CT

Notes: "The Power of Music" was a panel discussion sponsored by Connecticut Forum that featured Phish guitarist Trey Anastasio, Grateful Dead guitarist Bob Weir, jazz trumpeter Nicholas Payton, and opera star Beverly Sills. Bill Flanagan, vice president of VH1, was the moderator. Flanagan asked questions of the panel members in the first half, while written questions from the audience were answered in the second half. At one point, Trey reportedly stated that "my new musical interests can ideally be applied to Phish when we get back together."

Before the discussion Trey played an acoustic version of "The Inlaw Josie Wales." Later Bob Weir did an acoustic "Victim or a Crime," and Nicholas Payton played a smoking version of Louis Armstrong's "Potato Head Blues." The event ended with the three men collaborating on a funky/bluesy instrumental with Bob on electric guitar and Trey on acoustic guitar.

Notes: This show was a benefit concert to celebrate life and music of Mark Vann (banjoist and founding member of Leftover Salmon, who was recently diagnosed with melanoma) and raise money for the Mark Vann Fund. (Proceeds from the event were directed to the artist's medical bills and treatment.)

The show began with a set let by Lo Faber (God Street Wine), with some former members of the Ominous Seapods. Then Phish bassist Mike Gordon took the stage for a special set with trumpeter Gary "El Buho" Gazaway, guitarist Scott Murawski (Max Creek), saxophonist Floyd King, and drummer Aaron Johnston (Jazz Is Dead). DJ Logic later led a set that featured keyboardist John Medeski, drummer Eric Kalb, and the horn section from Deep Banana Blackout; Gordon once again sat in. [About the HPB]

HPB DETAILS:
The Helping Phriendly Book is the common name for the Phish.Net setlist archive, the collected lists of songs played at Phish concerts from 1983 through today. The HPB is brought to you by the work and contributions of countless fans at absolutely no charge. Please note that while the HPB continues to be the first source of recent setlists, as well as an important online reference, the Mockingbird Foundation has published the most complete and accurate setlist database available anywhere (with research assistance from the band's official archives) in their book The Phish Companion. For definitive setlist data, please refer to that document. Thanks, and happy listening!

Copyright, Credits, and History: Read about who has worked on the HPB over the years, and see your name if you've contributed!
ZZYZX's Phish Stats: since the HPB search capabilities are rather limited, we encourage you to use ZZYZX's Phish Stats. Please try the variety of powerful tools he offers before emailing me in search of a setlist. Thanks.
