Why shouldn't I go to a show without a ticket?
People showing up at shows has caused severe problems at some shows in the past (e.g. in Morrison, outside the 1996 Red Rocks shows). Someone asked on rec.music.phish whether this was unusual or whether ticketless folks cause broader problems; Shelly posted (5/5/97) this concise plea: "If the show is sold out in advance, then yes, it causes problems, mainly because the infrastructure at venues is designed only to accommodate the maximum capacity of the venue (access roads, parking space, porta-johns, etc.). When many people come without tickets, then both ticket-holders and local residents are denied the use of these essential services, and problems such as traffic jams and inappropriate toiletting result. Such situations jeopardize Phish's opportunities to play at the same venues in the future. Inappropriate behavior on the part of people who are unable to obtain tickets (gate-crashing, scamming, negative encounters with local residents) exacerbates these problems. This is why we always ask that if you do not have a ticket to a sold-out show, please do not come (information about whether shows are sold out or not is available via the hotline, 802.860.1111 and the web site http://www.phish.com). Thank you."
"If you don't have a ticket, don't come. This is real.> This is first a music concert, not a free-for-all party. ... Many of the people without tickets have no responsibility or obligation to our scene. They don't give a shit. They act like idiots. They think it's just a party to get as trashed as possible at. We're supposed to be about higher consciousness, not drunken stupidity. ... They can only get away with this crap if you let them. The old slogan is true: if you're not part of the solution, you're part of the problem. ... Listen to the rules, and pressure others to do so."" -- Billy, Jerry, Phil, Mickey, Bobby, Vince [The Grateful Dead; c. 7/2/95]"
