How can I tape if I don't own microphones?
From: Pat Loughery (9-23-93): I'm considering the purchase of a DAT deck to
tape at Phish and other shows, now that I've realized how fun it
is to have live music around the house. What's the etiquette involved
in patching into somebody else's deck who has a better setup than
you? Or into a soundboard? Is it considered appropriate only to
patch into somebody that you know, or can you just go up to a random
taper or soundboard guy and ask him/her if you can patch into his
stuff?
From Max Erenberg (4-16-96): Tapers are very helpful with patches every one
with a deac will get signal if it can be done... there is a little
bit of protocol i guess you could say DATs are first on the chain
,, the dat decks with digital cables will be first on the chain
then the DAT decks with standard analog cables then the Mini disk
or analog tapers .. the reason behind this order is simple but let
me explain,, there is no loss in quality when digital cqables are
first everyone will have the exact same signal as the lead deck
then the analoug cables ,, there is some loss of quality as you
get further down the line but if you can hear the difference you
have supper human ears or have eaten too much lsd. then the mini
disks and analoug tapers becaus they have to flip there tapes so
the possibility for a cut exists.. I have seen chanes of more than
10 decks being run off of one set of mic's, not necessarally in
a chain but with some splitters ect,, all you need to tape is a
deck and some cables.. please try to have the cables but if you
don't i'm sure someone in the tapers section will try to loan you
one or rig somthing out.. rember that the taping cummunity is a
small tight nit bunch we know most of the other tapers and treat
them as familly,, we are always glad to see new faces we just don't
like asswholes,, If you have any question don't feel stupid to ask
we all started at some point...also it is the responsibility and
DUITY of the taper to get thoes tapes out into circulation at NO
COST,, If we hear that you are selling tapes we'll try to make sure
you never get another taper ticket or patch.
Digital Patching equipment: &quopt;Battery for your deck. Digital coax
cable. Depending on how fancy you want to get, you might also bring
stereo mini->dual rca (for decks like the Aiwa HD-S1), tip/ring/ring/sleeve->dual
rca (Denon DTR-80P), optical to rca converter box & 7-pin to optical
connector (small Sony portables), etc.; but I'd stick with the first
two (and maybe the trrs if you have a cheap source for them)."
