MYSTERY JAM MONDAY PART 317

Welcome to the 317th edition of Phish.Net's Mystery Jam Monday, the penultimate MJM of March. The winner will receive an MP3 download code courtesy of our friends at LivePhish.com / Nugs.Net. To win, be the first person to identify the songs and date of these three mystery clips, which are connected by a theme that needn't be part of the correct answer. Each person gets one guess to start – if no one guesses correctly, I will post a hint on Tuesday around 10 AM PT / 1 PM ET. After the hint, each person gets one more guess before the contest ends Wednesday, and the winner announced shortly thereafter. Good luck!

Answer: Congrats to @prab_mode on his second win, pulling a sneak attack on the blog before the hint dropped. He correctly identified three consecutive (and not on the Jam Charts) versions of "Bathtub Gin": 8/9/98, 8/16/98, and 11/4/98. Thanks again to @wumbo for his masterful EQ work in creating this week's puzzle. Check out MJM318 on Monday morning...

GottaJibboo So one of these clearly sounds like "arguably" the greatest jam in Phishtory. But I listened and don't think they jive. Plus I can't imagine a penultimate MJM to be that obvious.

To @stevemott's point, I do believe these are all the same song.

I thought the same thing but couldn’t confirm it either. Are one of these two above me correct? I’m betting one is. I need to get a much better ear for these things, get more time, or a combo of the two.

knee-jerk reaction on my part. just throwing something out there. guessing justino nailed it. he usually does.

I don't think I am right. But I figured I might as well make an educated guess. This will be solved soon and I work late on Mondays.

Triedtotellyabutohwell Can't listen to tunes, but they all sound like Jim's to me, not gins. Of course... I'm completely stabbing in the dark.

wforwumbo As the constructor once again of this week’s puzzle, I will only confirm no one has posted the correct answer.

Edit: I’ll also remind everyone... these jams are connected by a theme. @uctweezer won’t hint at what that is until tomorrow though.

justino I am going to be pissed if clip one is 6/28/00. My friends and I raged the lawn hard that night. Still get goosebumps when I hear it... provided it isn't a 30 second snippet!

I give you 3 '98 gins back to back for your mjm(tuesday)

8/9/98 gin

based on the recording, i at least knew the second gin was played in an open field.

good on you, prab_mode!

In my notes I had "Neumann89 mic???" for the 2nd track :)
I was thinking '98 Gin to start but started jumping all over the place.

Holy moly, well done! At nearly 5 am EST too, hopefully you’re on the west coast and my puzzle didn’t keep you up too late.

Props for avoiding the double traps of the first jam sounding a lot like 12/2/99 Gin and the second jam sounding like passages from Riverport.

For the record, the theme was the three Gins from ‘98 that aren’t on the jam chart.

prab_mode they are consecutively played also!

Yes they are, though if the theme/our hint was “three Gins played back to back” I think that would be significantly more difficult.

Jealous you caught the first two. All three of these Gins are lovely, with Virginia and mcnichols being in my personal top 10 (possibly even top 5) for the song.

For that clip I used the FOB Schoeps mk21 tape, which I further EQ'd with my studio equalizers.

prab_mode The VA beach source sounds crisp, probably a bit of an upgrade from the flacs i downloaded a decade ago.

mcgrupp81 Nice MJM. Always enjoyed that VA Beach Gin. I watched the 8/16 Gin on YouTube. Would have been nice to be basking in Maine, toking away to that sweet music.
