Welcome to the Phish.Net Archives!
Since the inception of the Phish.Net in the early
90's, efforts have been made to offer a variety of different resources for
Phish fans all around the world. This page is an attempt to synthesize all
of the different projects that currently reside as a part of the Phish.Net
archives.
Several resources, such as the
Phish.Net Frequently Asked Questions File, the
Helping Phriendly Book, Newbie Central
and most recently Dan Schar's Review.Net have grown
beyond the scope of this page and are now recognized as major areas of the
Phish.Net web site.
Currently archived projects include:
Good question! For the simplest, most direct answer, visit our
Newbie Central page which guides those new to Phish
through the basic facts about the band and their music.
For all the facts that exist about the band, Phish means different things
to different people. Because of this, aLi
has conducted a survey, asking the
question "What is Phish?" of many fans. One Phish
fan, Christopher Wicklein
<chrisw@ais.net>, has provided a particularly comprehensive answer:
Who is Phish?
Phish is a band from the
Burlington-area in Vermont. Formed in 1983 and
modified around 1986 when second guitarist
Jeff Holdsworth left and
pianist Page McConnell joined, Phish is: Trey Anastasio, Mike Gordon, Jon
Fishman, and Page McConnell. Trey and Mike play
guitar and
bass guitar respectively. Jon plays the
drums and Page plays
keyboards.
What Does Phish Sound Like?
According to bassist Mike Gordon, Phish plays "bluegrass, Latin, rock,
funk, classical, jazz, calypso, hard-core, and Broadway." Sometimes these
styles are employed individually, other times they are fused together.
Phish's music is characterized by simple lyrics, sophisticated instrumentals,
extensive musical communication, and
extended improvisation. Some of
Phish's songs conform to conventional
concepts of popular music, other songs serve as frameworks for
improvisation.
What Makes Phish Unique?
Phish brings together technical skill, stylistic variety, tremendous
understanding of music, creativity, and a willingness to
experiment. These attributes in
combination set Phish apart from most other musicians. Phish is a
live band. Their albums are interesting and entertaining but do not
define the band as their
performances do.
Take the time to read the responses from
other fans! Feel free to submit
your own response to the question "What is Phish?"
Phish has made quite a splash in the media, with several radio
and television appearances, several
books about the band either
in development or currently in print, one book
written by a member of the band, Mike's Corner,
as well as in countless magazine and newspaper articles.
Presented here are many of those articles.
Over the years, both fans and members of the media have made efforts to
interview members of the band, the crew
which supports them as well as other, less often seen members of the Phish
organization who help make Phish the band we know and love. Presented here are
many of those interviews which we've
collected.
An archive exists of the Phish Digest, the
original Phish mailing list which is no longer in existance. We are currently
working to make these archives more readily accessible. They are currently
available via FTP in a unix
compressed format, though both Mac programs
and IBM programs
are provided to uncompress them.
Please note: The digest archive is currently broken down
into a set of 9 subdirectories (Volume - Volume8), each containing
up to 1000 messages. These directories are then broken down into further
subdirectories (digests.001-024 - digests.975-999), each containing
25 files with names like digest1.91Aug8.gz or digest231.95Jun11.gz.
It is these files, ending with .gz which you will want to download and
uncompress to view that digest.
Similar archive exists for Benjy's Digest
and can be found at http://archive.phish.net/lsv-archive/benjys-digest/
and the Phunky Bitches are
currently offering "The
Best of the PB", an archive of the best posts to the
Phish-Women mailing list. We hope to
some day offer a similar archive of Rosemary's Digest.
Phish allows and encourages people to tape shows, on the condition that the
tapes are traded freely and not for profit. The Phish.Net's
section on Phish Tapes is a great place to
find more information about aquiring copies of these tapes.
Paul Hemmer's Guide for Newbies
is full of important information. Anyone interested in getting
Phish tapes should read it carefully!
Dan Mielcarz has written an extremely thorough set of guidelines outlining
How to Trade Tapes. This is definitely
a must-read for any Phish fan who is interested in getting started trading
tapes!
Phish tapes are readily available. Please do
not sell or buy tapes, buy bootleg CDs, or in any way encourage profit making
from Phish's music. Be sure to check outPhish's recently updated
audio recording and transfer policy
for more information.
(Note from the webmaster:
There may be a copyright problem involved with the Phish.Net web site
posting Phish lyrics and chords. Until these issues are resolved, we are not
going to put any work into preparing the Lyrics and Chords Files into format
for the World Wide Web. Please have patience, updated news will be placed
here when it becomes available.)
Please do not write to us and complain about this situation! We are well
aware it's a problem for some people, but we are doing our absolute best
right now.
Non-hypertext versions are still available.

We are currently in the process of building a collection of sound files for
the Phish.Net archives. In the meantime,
here are a few links to different sites which feature Phish sounds on the Net:
Beyond the resources currently listed on this page, there are several other
projects currently in development which we hope to add to this page soon. Some
things to look forward to in the not to distant future include, but are not
limited to: The Phish.Net Recommended Music List, Today in Phish.Net History
and a growing collection of sound clips and audio excursions. In addition,
efforts are being made to catalog the archived material in the
Phish.Net FTP archives for
presentation on this page as well
