Why
is the song called Magilla?
Raising the specter of another Hebrew connection, Jack Lebowitz asked (8/2/97), "Wasn't the magilla the Book of Esther in the o.t., the story of one of those ancient 'Jews foiling their enemies' things celebrated by the Purim holiday? And kind of used in a slangy yiddish way to mean 'the whole big deal nine yards book?'"
Alternately, Joe Rioux suggested (8/2/97) Magilla the Gorilla. And Craig DeLucia reported (8/1/97) that, "in the episode of Happy Days where Fonzie's cousin tries to set the world record for flipping quarters off of his arm and catching them ... The name of the book of records? The Magilla Book of Records."
"Slowly, over time, we started picking up on the jazz thing. It's really an important thing to learn, on a lot of different levels. First of all, it's the American art form. Second, harmonically and musically you learn so much from jazz, even if you're not going to be a straight-ahead jazz player. Any kind of musician can learn from jazz."
