How is Junta pronounced?

Pronunciation of Junta

From Shelly Culbertson : "I asked Page about this when I interviewed him in Arcata; he told me that it is pronounced 'junta', not 'hunta', because it is a friend's nickname [former manager Ben Reed "Junta" Hunter, who co-founded Dionysian with John Paluska] & doesn't have anything to do with South American governments." That's JUNe-tuh (ta as in pasTA) or JOON-tah, not JUHN-ta and not HOON-ta, because that's the way Ben pronounced it. Mike pronounces it JOON-tuh, as in this interview soundclip. (Thanks to Jeff <Jekat@aol.com>.) But Trey, for instance, has pronounced it JUHN-tuh. Jamie Sachs emailed 10/25/96 to say, "A long time ago, before Phish was the great huge success that they are now, they didn't have a whole lot of people to do all of their stuff for them: like record their Hotline message. 'We still have plenty copies of JUHN TA and Lawn boy' as stated by trey." To confuse things more, a New England newspaper used "Punta" when reporting on the 12-31-93 show.

However, Yenke Rhoda A Dellecave posted 4/23/96 that "in Spanish Junta is a form of a word meaning together." And when "Hempphreak" "looked up the word 'junta' in the dictionary the definition read something to the effect of 'a group of people brought together for a common purpose' and another definition of 'junta' was a small group which has taken power after a revolution'. Now i know that Page said that junta was a friends nickname but anyone in their right mind would not publicly admit to plotting a revolution (which Phish is quite capable of starting) because they would never be successful in their revolutionary actions."

Dates for live cuts on Elektra re-release

Greg Carrier wrote: "Just got a show yesterday that is labelled 7/25/88. Here's the suprise: It has the exact Icculus and Sanity from Junta! Crazy! Freaked me out. So which date is right? 7/25 or 5/3/88?

Shelly responded: "7/25/88 is the correct date, even though Junta says 5/3/88. Here's what happened: During the west coast tour in the spring of 1992, some of the band members and crew and I went wine-tasting in the Napa Valley on a day off. (I guess that was 4/20/92 - between Santa Cruz and Eureka.) At the end of the day, as an afterthought, I lent the band my copy of 7/25/88 to listen to on the drive north, just for giggles. They liked it. At this same time, they were looking for material to fill the second CD of the Junta set, since the original Junta material was too long to fit on one CD. So, they decided to use part of 7/25/88 since it was from the same time period as the creation of Junta. However, back in the summer of '88 the band was not archiving their shows; only one person [Phil Fernandez] made a tape that night, and they only taped 45 minutes of the show. The copy I had was third generation - I tracked it through the people I'd gotten it from till I found the guy with the master, who kindly agreed to let the band use it for the CD. The reason that he only taped 45 minutes of the show that night was that that was all the blank tape he had - one side from another show he'd taped recently: 5/3/88. When the tape went to Elektra to master the Junta CD, apparently they read the date off the wrong side of that tape when preparing the liner notes."

"Well, you pay a lot of money for engineers and people in the studio who have their agenda and your music kind of ends up getting filtered. ... Junta is the closest thing that you'll hear to us feeling no pressure.""

Addicted to Noise, c. 6/95"
