What happened for Halloween '98?

This year brought a two-night run (10/30 and 10/31) in Sin City, aka Lost Wages. The first of the two nights was the band's 15th anniversary. The second set of 10/31 was the Velvet Underground's Loaded.

  • Phishbill: A Phishbill (alt) was distributed on entry to the show to identify and laud Loaded.
  • Original: Loaded is a rarely noticed but influential album, with (as Jeremy Goodwin noted) rock and roll (Rock and Roll, others), incredibly perfect pop (Sweet Jane), countrified rock (Lonesome Cowboy Bill), 50's vocal groups style (Found a Reason), southern rock anti-anthem (Oh! Sweet Nothing), etc. New Age is a brilliant anti-ballad. Mark Leviton's liner notes in the original include the line, "It's been said that only a few thousand people ever bought a Velvet Underground album, but every one of them formed a rock 'n' roll band." Thanks to Keith Derman and to Mark Leviton

  • Reviews: Rolling Stone said of the album, "The most influential rock & roll band of the last 20 years? This one - no contest. ... Reed reaches his songwriting zenith on LOADED, and the band's wall-of-raunch cystalizes into instantly recognizable song structures. 'Sweet Jane' and 'Rock & Roll' deserve their status as anthems; those invigorating three-chord heartbeat riffs underscore the stirring, evocative details in the lyrics. Singing about suburban Jenny, whose 'life was saved by rock & roll,' Reed struck a resonant chord with a new, disaffected generation of rock & rollers. Never a best seller, this landmark album is now out of print." Thanks to Jeremy Birchman 11/3/98.
  • On Sale: Most phans have only been able to find a Rhino Records reissue (the "Fully Loaded Version") which includes an alternate version of the entire album (!) plus ten additional bonus tracks. However, Leviton emailed that, "The original album (for which i served as reissue producer) is still in print on the Warner Special Products label - it is being sold simultaneously with the Rhino reissue with the additional disc. ... (The Rolling Stone review [below] was written during the short period the album was out of print)."
  • Sales: Syd Schwartz reported (11/11/98) that in the week after Phish's performance, 571 copies of the single-disc version were sold (compared to 157 the previous week, 107 the week before that, and 114 the week before that) and 474 copies of the double-disc "Fully Loaded" version were sold (compared to 113 the previous week, 100 the week before, and 67 the week before that.)
  • Lou Reed said of Loaded, "Ah, yes - the Velvets album for people who don't get the Velvets.". During an interview with Bradley Lonard in 1986

Broadcast: From an Elektra newsletter 9/98, "The Phish Halloweenshow will be taped and syndicated to 50-80 markets ans will be a two hour special." From Billboard Magazine 10/3/98, the show "will be broadcast over the radio during the Thanksgiving weekend." The broadcast will reportedly include Axilla, Roggae, Birds of a Feather, Frankie Sez, Sweet Jane, Rock and Roll, Cool It Down, New Age, Head Held High, I Found A Reason, and Oh! Sweet Nuthin'.
